Greek Mythology - Pandora
In Greek Mythology, Pandora (meaning “the all-gifted”) was the first human woman created by the deities. Zeus ordered Hephaestus to mold her out of earth as part of the punishment of humanity for Prometheus’ theft of fire, and all of the gods joined in offering her gifts. Pandora came with a jar, in modern accounts translated as “Pandora’s box”, which when opened released all the evils of humanity, leaving only Hope inside once she had closed it again. The myth of Pandora is ancient; in all surviving literary versions, however, the myth is kind of a theodicy, addressing the question of why there is evil in the world (x).
